Moving Stills

I always think it’s funny when I come across that one last house holding out against development.  I see this occasionally across all parts of Phoenix and the surrounding suburbs.  I’m sure the families are sad to see their neighbors sell & move away, but then at some point it becomes “the principle of it.”

Arrowhead Ranch is one of the few, if not only, neighborhood in the Northwest Valley which has a similar feel to McCormick Ranch in Scottsdale - mostly due to it’s grass-filled center medians and it’s maturity.

a massive dust storm rolls through Phoenix

Last night we had a dust storm as big as I’ve seen in a long, long time.  I remember being a kid, and my dad would take me up to the roof of the house, where we would watch a brown wall move across the sky.  When the wind started to pick up, we’d head back inside & watch the storm through the windows.  Last night’s storm was just like that - amazing.

When my older son & I left the house at 5:45, we had blue skies above us but could see dark skies to the west.  This picture was taken at 5:59 (yes, that’s BEFORE sunset!) from the In n Out drive-through with my blackberry (and not touched up at all).

Location. Location. Location. It’s hard to imagine a better location in all of Phoenix than the Scottsdale Waterfront Residences (on the corner of Scottsdale and Camelback). Across the street from Camelback Mountain to the north, the Waterfront and Downtown Scottsdale to the south, and surrounded by Scottsdale Fashion Square’s world class shopping and dining. This wouldn’t be bad place to call home.

This was a great week for me. We closed escrow on a home which sits on a lot with fantastic views – mountains and golf courses in about 320 degrees (except for part of the home next door, as seen here!) In addition, I learned about a fun photo-editing software called Picnik (thanks to Teresa Boardman!)

Driving up 51st Avenue towards Loop 101 in the rain earlier this spring. I had been waiting for another good rainstorm to post this, but today I figured you could use a reminder of what cooler weather looks like!

A field of Cholla where a new subdivision meets the desert mountains. Cholla (pronounced choy-a), also known as the Jumping Cactus, is one of the most beautiful, yet feared and hated, cacti in the desert. Get too close, and one of the plant’s pads will “jump” onto your skin, shirt, shoes, whatever it can. And since the entire pad is made up of needle-sharp spines, it’s not easily dislodged!

The original hospital in Phoenix, St Joseph’s began in 1895 when the Sisters of Mercy raised enough money to rent a six-bedroom cottage to help tuberculosis patients. In 1945, as Phoenix’s population boomed to 100,000 people, the Sisters purchased 10 acres of land (for $25,000 and way up north of the city) for the current site at 3rd Avenue and Thomas Road.

It wasn’t too long ago that the Carefree Highway was WAY north of town. Today there are developments springing up – both residential and retail/commercial – all the way from I-17 to Scottsdale Rd. But there’s still enough empty desert, and the occasional Cattle Warning, to remember what Phoenix used to be like…
